Why thoughtful and good questions matter?
The interview is more than a technical exchange of information, it is a sacred moment of discernment. The questions we ask are not simply about uncovering skills, but about discerning character, calling, and alignment with God’s mission.
In Scripture, Jesus Himself modeled the power of asking good questions.
- “Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:15) — Revealed truth and conviction.
- “Do you want to be healed?” (John 5:6) — Exposed desire and readiness.
- “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51) — Invited honesty of need.
Questions are a tool not just for information, but for revelation.
- Proverbs 20:5 — “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.”
- Well-crafted questions help uncover what truly motivates a candidate, their values, and how they live out their faith.
- Example: “Tell us about a time when your faith guided your decision-making at work.”
- Proverbs 27:19 — “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.”
- Behavioural questions allow candidates to reflect on real-life choices, revealing patterns of honesty, humility, and resilience.
- Example: “Share about a time when you faced conflict, how did you handle it in a Christ-like way?”
- Isaiah 6:8 — “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
- Just as God’s call invited Isaiah’s response, thoughtful questions help discern whether candidates sense God’s leading into this role.
- Example: “How do you see this role as part of your calling to serve God’s Kingdom?”
- James 1:19 — “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
- Asking with genuine curiosity communicates respect and love.
- Candidates often reveal more when they sense the interviewer is truly listening with empathy.
- Pray before & after — Ask God to give wisdom to ask the right questions (James 1:5).
- Use open-ended questions — Invite stories, not just “yes/no” answers.
- Balance grace & truth — Be compassionate but also discerning (John 1:14).
- Listen with spiritual ears — Pay attention not only to words but also to the heart and spirit behind them.
- Ask questions that connect to mission — Keep Christ and the organisation’s vision central.
- Use the same core questions for each candidate to ensure fairness.
The art of questioning is not just a skill—it is a ministry tool. In every interview, we echo the way Jesus used questions: to reveal the heart, test truth, and invite alignment with God’s purposes.
“Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.” — Proverbs 1:5
