Step 6: Shortlist candidates for interviews

This phase is not just about assessing qualifications; but also, prayerfully discerning who God is calling to serve in your team and ensuring each step in the hiring process reflects His guidance, wisdom, and mission.

Consider many rounds for thorough discernment, the more senior or critical the role, the greater the number of interview rounds required

    1. Screening: General fit & motivation

Purpose: This first step helps filter applicants before deeper interviews.

    • Check motivation – Why are they applying? Do they see this as a calling or just a job?
    • Assess fit – Does their background match the general requirements? Are they open to serving in your mission context?
    • Tone & spirit – Listen for enthusiasm, humility, and sincerity.

Tip: Begin with a warm prayer or blessing—this sets the tone and reflects your ministry values from the start.

    2. Interview with the hiring manager: Skills & role-specific problem solving

Purpose: To ensure the candidate has the competence needed for the role.

    • Skills & knowledge – Can they perform the core tasks?
    • Problem solving – Ask role-specific scenarios: “If you faced this challenge in ministry, how would you respond?”
    • Work ethic & growth – Do they show willingness to learn, adaptability, and stewardship of their gifts?

Biblical Perspective: Colossians 3:23 – “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

This interview should test if the candidate can apply their gifts with excellence for God’s glory.

    3. Panel interview: Spiritual discernment & ministry alignment

Purpose: To prayerfully assess character and calling.

    • Spiritual maturity – How do they practice their faith in daily life and leadership? Can they work in unity with the team, building others up in Christ?
    • Mission alignment – Do they resonate with your organisation’s vision and statement of faith?

    Best Practices:

    • Include leaders from different parts of the ministry to give diverse perspectives.
    • Open and close with prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
    • Ask faith-centered questions:
    • “How do you stay rooted in Christ when work is difficult?”
    • “Describe a time when your faith shaped a decision you made at work."

Biblical Perspective: Acts 15:28 – “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…” decisions should be made with unity and discernment.
