    Course summary

Well done on completing this course. Here is a summary of the key ideas from the course. We encourage you to discuss what you have learnt with your team.

“Healthy organisations will outlive the people who work in them and they will have significant impact on our world due to the sum of their parts rather than the role of one specific leader.”

    Growing in self-awareness:

    • Have a clear vision beyond yourself for leading the organisation. You need to be able to see the organisation thrive without having you in the picture.
    • Wise leaders cultivate self-awareness, by taking time regularly to listen to God and to their team

Four steps to lead with transition in mind:

    1. Get a mentor or coach. Unchartered territory requires a guide. Invite them to ask you tough questions to prepare you well for when you leave. Note this is key a pre-transition activity.

    2. Ask the Lord how your identity is tied to the organisation. Take 30 minutes to listen and note the things God speaks to you. Reflect on how it feels to picture the organisation without you. If that thought provokes lots of emotion, consider taking further time out to pray through this.

    3. Engage honestly with your team. Create opportunities for regular feedback, either through an anonymous 360 feedback, or by asking open questions (stop, start, continue). List some action steps you are going to take. If this is hard for you, reflect on why it is difficult to ask for feedback.

    4. Write down your post-transition thoughts.

    • What fears do I have?
    • What am I excited about?
    • What opportunities can I develop?

    Four keys of leadership framework:

    Leaders guide questions:

    • Can you see your organisation without you leading it? What might it look like?
    • In what ways is your identity tied to your organisation? If you’ve been in your organisation for a long time, what emotions are sparked when you think about not being a part of the leadership?
    • A time will come when someone else is leading your organisation. How will you make sure you will be ok with all the decision-making of the new leader if you have no say in it? What do you need to do to get yourself in that place?

    Questions for your team:

    • What do you think I need to stop doing?
    • What can I start doing that would support you?
    • What am I doing that is helpful for you and I should continue to do?
